What is a Flat Screen TV?

By now, you have probably seen your fair share of square televisions squished like pancakes, but what is a flat screen tv, exactly?

Really, there are two options when it comes to this type of television: LCD and plasma. Both types have their ups and downs, and both types have become immensely popular. To try and answer the original question (what is a flat screen tv?), we must first look at the two kinds separately. Since LCD displays tend to be more abundant, let’s begin with this type of screen. LCD literally means “liquid-crystal display,” and it is something of a scientific marvel.

When the LCD television first came out, many believed that this technology was only useful for smaller screens. This is precisely why early LCDs were only made up to 40”. Thanks to this type of reputation, many believed that the LCD would never compete with the plasma tv, which was much bigger. As technology progressed, those LCD screens got much larger. Today, these televisions are just as big as the largest plasma television is (and some may even be bigger). Now, let’s talk about that famous plasma television type.

Plasma televisions (PDP) work via miniature cells that are stuck between two sheets of glass. These cells include noble gases (neon and xenon). When the gas inside of the television is turned on, it forms plasma, which then causes the phosphors to give off light. Although many people tend to confuse plasmas with LCDs, these two television types are drastically different due to the individual technologies that they employ. Now that you know the answer to the earlier question (what is a flat screen tv?), you can decide which one to buy. Still, prior to purchasing either one, make sure to do a lot of research into each product (and company).

Either way, these televisions tend to be rather expensive, though many claim that they will last longer than the older kind. Really, the best way to test out these televisions is to try them out in a store. If you do enough research, you will discover that one may be better than the other (though both tend to be relatively equal).

What is a flat screen tv? Well, now you know. Whether you choose an LCD screen or a plasma screen, you are sure to love the picture quality that these televisions emit.
